Support Victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas

Bishop Richard Pates asks parishes in the Diocese of Des Moines to hold a special collection in the next few weeks to provide financial aid for the Gulf Coast devastated by the catastrophic Hurricane Harvey and subsequent rain that's dumped an unprecedented amount of water on Texas.

All contributions will be given on behalf of the Diocese of Des Moines to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to be used where there is the greatest need.

"The images we're seeing from Corpus Christi, Rockport and Houston show communities suffering unimaginable damage from wind and rain that continues to fall at unprecedented levels. Homes are flooded. Cars are submerged. The pictures of families fleeing their homes with just the clothes on their backs, of people wading chest-deep in water seeking shelter, are heartbreaking," said Bishop Pates.

In addition to financial support, he asks for prayers for those affected.

"This is a time when people of good will must come together to provide prayer and support to our neighbors to the south, he added. The toll of the storm will continue to rise and we know the recovery process will be long and arduous."
